Osmosis is a long term chemical process in which hygroscopic (or water
absorbing) breakdown products are liberated from glassfibre laminates
by constant exposure to moisture. This is turn encourages further absorption
until eventually moisture is absorbed more quickly than it can escape
and blisters form in the gelcoat.
Boats kept afloat all year round and those kept on fresh water rivers
and lakes are most at risk, although almost all glassfibre hulls are likely
to become osmotic if not protected.
